AUTUMN EQUINOX
(MABON)
The Second Harvest & the Balance of Light & Dark
THEMES

The Equinoxes, Spring & Autumn, are when the length of day & night equal each other - the earth in balance.

Mabon is the modern name for the pagan festival marking this time of year and it is the second of the three harvest festivals which include Lughnasadh & Samhain. The name Mabon comes from the Welsh God, who was the son of the Earth Mother Goddess.

Many cultures celebrate the harvest of crops & how well fed the animals have become, in preparation for the approaching winter. Those celebrating the Mabon festival give thanks for the plentiful harvest and share the fruits of the harvest for the coming winter months.

The Harvest Moon, which is the full moon that occurs closest to the Autumn Equinox, historically allowed farmers to work late into the night, helping them to bring the crops in from the fields.

The equinoxes are prime time for Northern Lights, and geomagnetic activities are more likely to take place in the spring and autumn than in the summer or winter.
